Massage Glossary
The following definitions come from various sources including the Milady Theory & Practice of Therapeutic Massage 5th Edition.
Alveoli - Tiny, delicate air sacs deep within the lungs, where the gas/blood exchange occurs.
A single epithelium cell thick
Amitosis – method of reproduction in which the nucleus and cytoplasm divide by simple construction without the duplicating of chromosomes.

Cerebral cortex - . It is the most highly developed part of the human
brain and is responsible for thinking, perceiving, producing and understanding
language. The cerebral cortex is divided into right and left hemispheres.
It encompasses about two-thirds of the brain mass and lies over and around most
of the structures of the brain.
Cilia - is an organelle found in eukaryotic cells. Cilia are slender
protuberances that project from the much larger cell body. Tiny hairs which line
the respiratory tract. They beat continuously to move mucus and dirt up the
bronchi and trachea.
Cisterna chyli - is a collecting area for lymph located deep in the abdomen at the base of the thoracic duct.
Cutaneous – Relating to the skin, dermal Pertaining to the skin
Dorsiflex(ion) - Turning upward of the foot or toes or of the hand or fingers, the act of bending backward (of the body or a body part)
Flagellum - plural: flagella) is a tail-like projection that protrudes from the cell body of certain prokaryotic and eukaryotic
cells, and plays the dual role of locomotion and sense organ, being sensitive to chemicals and temperatures outside the cell. Tail that
enable sperm to swim - Provides locomotion for cell. Provides a specific
function for the cell making it an organelle.
Histology - is a form of microscopic anatomy. It is a branch of biology that studies microscopic structures of tissues and living organisms.
Subcutaneous - The subcutaneous tissue is a layer of fat and connective tissue that houses larger blood vessels and nerves
(hypodermis). This layer is important is the regulation of temperature of the skin itself and the body. The size of this layer varies throughout the body and from person to person.
It also varies depending on age, sex and general health of the person.
